Due to an increase in population and city growth rate, urban centers face a challenge for transportation due to high volumes of traffic. Company Thysenkrupp from Germany has created one solution named TWIN® elevator system. TWIN® is the only elevator system available with two cabs travel independently within one elevator shaft. This innovative system requires 25% less space to transport the same number of passengers. “In the MULTI cable-free elevator system, several cabs travel in a single shaft – both vertical and horizontally.”[1] Ultimately this new solution is said to reduce downtime by up to 50%.

To call a TWIN® elevator you must select your destination on a panel display prior to entering the elevator. Software groups people traveling to the same destination, thus saving passengers the time of stopping on different floors. The advantage of the TWIN® allows people to quickly travel between different floors, making inner-hospital and office traveling more efficient. To stop the elevators from hitting one-another the TWIN® elevators have software monitoring systems mounted between the cabins, decelerating the cabins and making them stop completely if they are too close.

Georgia Tech has ordered 5 TWIN® elevator systems for their 21-story office and research building expected to open in 2018. More than 200 buildings worldwide use this elevator system.
