Smart Concrete™ is a value-added solution for ready-mix producers and advanced management tool for contractors, developed by Giatec Scientific. It is an integrated system consisting of three components:
1) The Smart Concrete™ device: a wireless 2” inch sensor with a short thermocouple tail. This device monitors concrete strength, temperature, and maturity.
2) Web-interface cloud system: storing and receiving sensor data
3) Free Smart Concrete™ application: access to real-time data, available on any Android or iOS device. Data logs are customizable according to job-sites for effective information management.

Best Practises
To optimize project scheduling, staff onsite begin the process by simply attaching the Smart Concrete™ sensor to the reinforcement using two twist ties, prior to pouring the concrete. Once the concrete is laid, the sensor transmits information using Bluetooth. By using IoT technology, real-time data is conveniently transmitted from the job-site directly to any mobile device within minutes. On the administrative side of business this allows for data to be quickly managed and relayed. Thereby, ensuring accuracy in next step decision making and preventing the burden of additional labour costs.

The traditional method for determining strength consists of testing field-cured cylinders. Although this method is widely accepted, it is offset by its limitations, specifically its susceptibility to error and process-intensive steps. During this method, field-cured samples are transported from the working site to a laboratory for testing. It is important to note, that the samples are prone to microcracking during the transportation process if they are not adequately formed at that stage. Microcracks will lead to discrepancies between the test data and site results. Inherent delays are associated with this method as the lab technician must conduct the break test to derive results and then relay this information to the contractor. On average, the field test usually takes, somewhere between 5 hours to 1 day.
