The Canadian firm CM Labs Simulation has recently introduced the Luffing Tower Crane Training Pack, which is a virtual training program that provides a simulation of all of the controls, functions and challenges that a crane operator would face in a dense urban setting.

Virtual Reality (VR) has already emerged within the construction industry in the form of providing virtual maps of construction sites which can bolster more efficient planning and resource management. It is only just now that, within the construction industry, CM Labs Simulations has become the first company to release a training simulation program geared at providing lessons on how to use a Luffing Tower Crane. The technology can not only accelerate the pace at which student operators can garner a full understanding of how to use a tower crane, but can also reduce the cost of doing so by up to 75%.

The software achieves this goal by providing the most realistic simulation of what it is actually to like to operate a crane in the real world. Visual distractions common to urban environments, such as passing cars, planes, and pedestrians can be included in the simulation to provide an extra level of difficulty to the simulation. Additionally, as users become more confident they can change the time of day to the middle of the night, which is often when construction projects take place. Furthermore, the simulation allows the user to test their abilities in adverse weather conditions such as cloud cover, rain, snow fog and wind. Given the inherent dangers that are involved in training new crane operators, technological advancements such as this are going to be crucial in the ongoing effort of making the construction industry as safe as can be.
